If you plan to visit from October through February, you simply can’t miss the Pismo Beach Monarch Butterfly Grove.

It’s one of the most exciting things to do in Pismo Beach, and it’s just down the road from all of our rentals!

About the Pismo Beach Monarch Butterfly Grove

From late October through February, visit the Pismo Beach Monarch Butterfly Grove to see more than 10,000 incredible butterflies! Every year, thousands of Monarch butterflies migrate to Pismo State Beach, coating the landscape in their vibrant orange and black. All you have to do is look up into the majestic eucalyptus trees to catch their beauty.

The Grove is staffed October – February, Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. until 4 pm. They also hold Docent talks during that time of the year at noon and 2 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. You might see straggler butterflies throughout the year, but you will miss the talks by the expert guides. So plan your trip accordingly to get the best experience.

You’ll find the Grove half a mile south of Pismo Beach off of Highway 1. If you’re in town on February 1st, don’t miss the celebrations for Western Monarch Day!

Other Wildlife You Can See Along the California Coast

Butterflies aren’t the only incredible wildlife in the Pismo Beach Area. Other land animals you might find include deer in any of the wineries, wild turkeys along the hiking trails, or rare birds who favor the rippling tide pools. Head to the Carrizo Plain National Monument to spot a majestic California Tule elk!

Elephant seals are another popular staple along Highway 1, and their peak months are from October through March. If you’re already in town during the butterfly season, you’ll likely see elephant seals as well!
